The United States boasts a highly developed crocodile farming industry due to its significant economic value. Among the numerous large farms, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm in Florida stands out as the largest, spanning 20 acres and housing over 2,000 alligators, including one measuring 15 feet in length. Crocodiles, being semi-aquatic reptiles, require both water and land for activities like basking and resting. At St. Augustine, barns mimic the American alligator's natural habitat with spacious enclosures featuring trees, swamps, and lakes. Each cage provides ample room, with a water surface area of up to 33 square feet and sunbathing areas spanning 33 square feet, allowing crocodiles to move freely and enjoy their surroundings.


Crocodiles usually mate in spring or early summer when the water warms. Female crocodiles lay 20 to 60 eggs, but large ones can lay up to 100, in deep nests on river or lake banks. Workers collect the eggs for incubation, maintaining temperatures between 30°C to 32°C and humidity at 90% to 100%, with hatching occurring after 65 to 80 days. Baby crocodiles are independent from birth, able to feed themselves with their sharp teeth and powerful claws. They have excellent eyesight and hearing, and can move quickly on land and in water. When selecting crocodile breeds, workers choose healthy animals that swim well, have no deformities, and are of uniform size. They prepare clean barns and release the crocodiles into lakes using plastic containers, introducing the new water source at the same time. The release occurs in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid temperature stress.


Crocodiles are carnivores that primarily eat vertebrates like fish, poultry, and amphibians, along with synthetic bran pellets. Breeders adjust feeding frequency and amounts based on the crocodile's age, with baby crocodiles fed daily and adults 2-3 times per week. The food provided is enough for a 30-minute feeding session. It is poured directly on the ground for the crocodiles to consume themselves.


Each farm and harvesting purpose is different, so the time to harvest crocodiles varies. Typically, after 3-5 years, a crocodile reaches 5-8 feet in length and weighs 44-132 pounds. Farm workers use electrical equipment to stun the crocodile before transport, securing their jaws with duct tape and tying their legs, then wrapping them in plastic bags. Crocodiles are knocked unconscious with electricity before processing. A worker makes a small cut in the crocodile's foot and inflates the skin with air to ease separation. Using a small knife, incisions are made between the legs and along the back. The skin is removed from the back, tail, legs, abdomen, and neck using a 45-degree knife angle. The skin is then washed and cleaned before soaking, tanning, dyeing, and being sent to leather factories. Crocodile meat is divided, with tenderloin being the most popular.
